Navigating Your Military Move with Ease

November, 2023

Military relocations can be quite challenging due to their unique nature. Each move represents a new chapter full of challenges and opportunities for military families. To ensure a smooth relocation process, our team at King Companies has compiled some helpful tips and resources that will assist you in making your next move the best one yet.

Planning reduces stress and eases complexity: Embarking on a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) process in the military can be daunting. It requires more than just being mentally and emotionally prepared. Proper planning and organization are essential to ensure a successful and stress-free transition. Below are some steps that can assist in preparing for a military PCS move.

Get information about your move: Before packing, seek guidance from your current base's Personal Property Office regarding your entitlements and available resources. Contact your sponsor at your new base for comprehensive information about your relocation.

Organize your important paperwork: Create a binder to keep all crucial documents, like orders, passports, personal records, housing applications, and insurance documents, easily accessible and organized.

Understand your entitlements: Learn about your entitlements, including the total weight of belongings the military will move for you. Estimate the weight of your household items to stay within this limit.

Know what qualifies as household goods (HHGs): Understand which items are considered HHGs and which are not, as you will be responsible for non-HHGs' transportation and costs.

Plan for pet relocation: Arrange for your pets' move, keeping in mind that pets are not included in your entitlement, and you may bear some or all their transport costs.

Reduce your belongings: Minimize the items to pack and move by decluttering and disposing of unnecessary belongings, keeping your entitlement and HHG limitations in mind.

Pack 'go bags' for immediate needs: Set aside essential items like clothes, toiletries, snacks, important documents, and comfort objects in a separate bag for easy access during transit and upon arrival.

Arrange transportation: Organize transportation for yourself, your family, vehicles, and items beyond your entitlement or those not qualifying as HHGs. Be aware of military discounts and reimbursement policies.

Plan for storage needs: Anticipate storage requirements at your new location, such as climate-specific clothing or furniture while house-hunting.

Arrange for cleaning after departure: Ensure your previous residence is left in good condition by planning for tasks like deep cleaning, utility disconnection, and staging if selling.

King Companies is a proud supporter of the U.S. Armed Forces, and we are grateful for the sacrifices our military families make daily to protect our freedom. As you prepare for this new chapter, remember you are part of a resilient and remarkable community. We're here to support you every step of the way.
