Relocation 101: Nine Tips for Packing Room by Room

May, 2024

Moving can be stressful, and not knowing how to pack properly can make it even more complicated. You can simplify the packing process and streamline the transition to your new home by breaking it down room by room. We asked the experts here at King Companies for advice on packing efficiently for an upcoming relocation. The following are their top tips for mastering your next move with ease.

  1.  Gather Your Supplies. Before starting to pack, gather all the necessary supplies to make the process smoother. You'll need boxes in various sizes, packing paper or bubble wrap, packing tape, marker pens, and labels or stickers to mark your boxes.
  2.  Start with Non-Essentials. Begin your packing journey by tackling items you won't need before moving day. This includes off-season clothing, books, decor, and other non-essential items that can be packed away early without disrupting your daily life.
  3.  Kitchen: Preserve Fragile Treasures. Wrap dishes, glasses, and cookware in bubble wrap or packing paper to prevent breakage or damage during your relocation. Filling empty spaces inside packed boxes with paper or packing peanuts is also recommended to ensure items stay put while in transit to your new home.
  4.  Bedrooms: Pack with Precision. When packing bedrooms, focus on clothing, bedding, and furniture. Pack clothing in boxes or suitcases, utilizing wardrobe boxes for hanging clothes to keep them wrinkle-free. Remove and pack bedding, pillows, and curtains, and disassemble bed frames if necessary; labeling and storing hardware makes reassembly easier when you arrive at your new home.
  5.  Bathroom: Organize Toiletries. When packing the bathroom, focus on toiletries, towels, and shower curtains. Labeled boxes should be used to pack toiletries securely, and plastic bags or sealable containers should be used for liquids to prevent leaks. Remember to securely wrap fragile items like mirrors or glass shelves to prevent damage during the move.
  6.  Home Office: Protect Important Documents. Pack paperwork in labeled folders or boxes and securely wrap and pack electronics like computers, printers, and scanners. Label cables and accessories to make setup easier at your new location and ensure that essential documents are transported safely.
  7.  Labeling: Streamline Unpacking. Label each box with the room it belongs to and briefly describe its contents. It’s a great idea to use color-coded stickers or markers to easily identify boxes belonging to each room. Also, creating an inventory of all packed items and boxes will help you keep track of all your belongings during and after the move.
  8.  Essentials Box: Prepare for Immediate Needs. Pack essential items you'll need immediately at your new home separately. These include toiletries, a change of clothes, basic kitchen supplies, and important documents. This will ensure you have everything you need to settle in comfortably while unpacking the rest of your belongings.
  9.  Final Check: Ensure Nothing is Left Behind. Before sealing each box, double-check that everything is packed securely and nothing is left behind. Knowing you're ready for moving day, this final check will give you peace of mind.

By following these room-by-room packing tips, you can streamline the moving process and ensure the safe and organized arrival of your belongings at your new home, allowing you to settle into your new space more quickly.
